Rory was the youngest of 10 children of John Joseph & Elizabeth (née McGowan) Mansfield of Sandymount, Co. Dublin, Ireland. He was born at the family home on Tritonville Road.
Following his brother Dr. Morgan, he attended National University of Ireland, University College, Dublin for both his undergraduate studies and Medical School. In 1956 he graduated 1st in his class, now as Dr. Roderick J. Mansfield with M.B., B.Ch., B.A.O. Degrees. His awards for academic excellence included Jr. Clinical Prize of St Vincent's Hosp., Bellingham Silver Medal in Medicine, O'Ferral Gold Medal in Surgery and the Smith Gold Medal in Obstetrics.
He followed Medical School performing his Internship and his Residencies at St. Vincent's Hospital, St. Stephen's Green, Dublin.
Dr. Mansfield began his medical career as a Professor of Anatomy at UCD before moving on to his decades long tenure as the Professor of Anatomy for the Medical School at Trinity College, Dublin, the position he held until his retirement.
'Uncle Rory' to his immediate family and 'Dr. Rory' to the extended family, he played the harmonica, banjo & guitar and was fluent speaker of his native Irish language. From his earliest years he was active in Fianna Fáil and remained heavily involved with the party throughout his life. Rory was a cherished uncle to his many nieces & nephews.
✞ Following his final Mass at the family parish Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Sandymount, Dr. Roderick J. Mansfield was buried with his brother Liam & sister in-law Maureen at Holmpatrick Graveyard in Skerries. His grave is next to those of his parents, sister Alice, brothers Seán & Cathal and his grandparents Capt. Thomas & Mary Anne (née King) Mansfield as well as the grave of his brother Foncie and nephew & namesake Rory.
