Born about 1857, Ellen is one of 8 known children of Luke & Alicia (née Hogan) Duff of Skerries, Ireland.

Ellen married Capt. James Flood in Skerries. James emigrated to America about 1896, settling in Brooklyn. Alice arrived in the fall of 1899 with their 2 young children, Alice & Henry. Little Alice died in the summer of 1901.

A few years after Capt. James passing in 1917 she married fellow Skerries native, the widower Capt. Michael McGowan. The McGowan, Duff & Flood families had known each other and sailed together for generations back home in their native villiage.

In an additional connections between the families, Ellen's brother Bernard was married to the sister of Capt. Michael's brother in-law Charlie Murray and Ellen's niece Alice Sherlock of Skerries married Michael's youngest son Joe McGowan in Brooklyn. After the widow Ellen married the widower Capt. Michael, the McGowan's all called her "Aunt Ellen".

✞ Ellen (née Duff) Flood-McGowan is buried with her 1st husband James in the Flood's family plot at Third Calvary in Queens. Buried with them is their young daughter Alice, son Harry and daughter in-law Margaret.
