Elizabeth had beautiful "sterling" blue eyes. She is the daughter of Elizabeth Locke & Peter Sterling. See 2 newspaper articles about Elizabeth attached to this memorial as photos. An article written on occasion of her 100 Birthday celebration in the April 12, 1919 Argus Leader, Sious Falls SD newspaper states Elizabeth was born in Mercer County Pennsylvania near Harlansburg, PA. The article states she was married 1839 and the moved to Waverly Iowa in 1856. Then to Clay County settling near Vermillion SD in 1869. When Douglas County opened up for settlement they moved there and farmed many years then to Armour SD and later to Sioux City, where Mr. Mathews died. She then moved to live with daughter Amanda in Burbank, SD
I am in possession of her diary, dated 1880. She describes the smallpox epidemic having killed different people and children dying from diphtheria. She also stated some of them were "vexenated." She states that on Sunday, January 23 her son A.G. went to "the point"aka Elk Point and got "vexenated" against smallpox. She continues to write about how her arm is very sore from the vaccination George's - her husband is sick in bed because of his "vexeavtion."
According to Family Bible Elizabeth's mother is Elizabeth Locke Sterling b. Oct 20, 1786 d. May 4, 1841(the note says "this was mother.") Elizabeth Locke Sterling is the mother of: James Sterling b. Feb 13, 1810; Anne Sterling Truby b. March 20 or 28 or 29, 1812 Westmoreland Co, PA; died January 3, 1898 Jefferson Co.
