He and his two brothers, Joshua H. and William A. Brandon, enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 10 July 1862 at Davie County, NC and mustered into "H" Co., NC 5th Cavalry. Joe was captured as a POW on 12 July 1863 at Hagerstown, MD and confined at Point Lookout, MD until exchanged on 20 March 1864 at City Point, VA.
Joe and his wife were among the 40 founding members of South Oak Ridge Baptist Church in 1896. Together they raised nine children to maturity and are credited with 46 grandchildren.
