"A retired minister from Brevard who was driving the wrong way on Interstate 26 before a fatal collision had suffered health problems in recent years and likely was confused about his direction of travel on the dark highway, family members said.

"That mistake by Dennis Tornquist, 63, led to his own death and that of another motorist – 61-year-old Fred King, of Canton – in a head-on collision at about 3:25 a.m. today on I-26 near the Brevard Road exit.

"King owned King & Associates Tax Service in Canton and also worked as a Transportation Security Administration officer at Asheville Regional Airport. He was on his way to the airport when the wreck happened, family members said.

"'He had a history of heart attacks and strokes,' Tornquist's sister-in-law, Faith Hvidding, said of him. "He also had a brain disease from all the heart attacks and strokes. I think he got confused, thinking he was going to his doctor. He was obsessed about finding his new doctor."

"Tornquist had made an appointment with a new doctor in Asheville on Tuesday morning, but despite leaving his Brevard home at 4:50 a.m. for a 9 a.m. appointment could not find the doctor's office. Hvidding thinks he mistakenly believed he had an appointment this morning and left home even earlier to find the doctor's office.

"'It's been a real shock," Hvidding said.' He loved his family. He loved the outdoors. He was fine until the last few days."

"She said the Tornquist family was grieving King's death as well.

"'We're grieving for their loss, and we're praying for the Lord to comfort them,' Hvidding said.

King's wife, Karen Cody, said her husband's death was a tremendous blow.

"'He loved, and he was loved," Cody said. "He was a people person. He was always happy and positive.'

"Cody, a teacher at Owen Middle School, said police came to her school to inform her of her husband's death.

"'It's a tragedy for two families,' Cody said.

"Tornquist, driving a 2001 Honda Civic, was traveling west in the eastbound lanes when his car collided with King's eastbound 1995 Chevy Tahoe, Asheville Police Sgt. Scott Pruett said. Police believe Tornquist got on I-26 at the Long Shoals Road ramp.

"Before striking King's vehicle, the Honda grazed a tractor-trailer. The truck driver, Jackie Taylor of Knoxville, Tenn., was not injured.

"'After he cleared Brevard Road, he was traveling down the straightaway," Pruett said of Tornquist. "The vehicle was in the path of a tractor-tractor. The tractor-trailer swerved to the right to avoid it. The vehicle made a slight contact with the tractor-trailer's rear wheels. When the tractor-trailer swerved, behind it was an SUV. The SUV did not have time to react.'

"Both drivers died at the scene, Pruett said.

"Police closed both eastbound lanes for more than three hours, reopening the lanes shortly before 7 a.m.

"Tornquist leaves behind his wife, four children and three grandchildren.

King leaves his wife, four children and eight grandchildren."
