Her first paid position was at a local 5 & Dime store in Gastonia, working at the candy counter. This is where she met my father Wilbur Lee Lovelace. They were married on December 15, 1945 in Chester County, S. C.
She raised four children, kept the family nourished, took care of us when we were sick, maintained our home, cared for her flower gardens and taught Sunday School in Calvary Baptist Church for many years. She also spent many hours helping in the Nursery at the church. She was an excellent cook and she loved her embroidery. She created many of the banners in the church that were placed in the halls of the educational building. She always had feline friends, whom she loved dearly. She hated snakes with everything she had and kept me busy when I was home, yelling for me to "bring the gun!" I would love to have a dollar for every one that I killed. At certain times of the day, she enjoyed her well-deserved "quiet time," on the front porch gazing at her award winning Geraniums, or making her thread and needle projects come to life, in her quiet little sewing room. During the winter months, it was all I could do to keep up with her need for more firewood. I used to say that she would out stoke a Fireman on a steam locomotive, if given the chance. She resided in Buncombe County for 46 years.
God knows how much I miss you dear Mother. With great love and admiration from your son Jeff, whose devotion will never end. I was blessed to be your son and your memories only grow stronger with each passing day.
