Redding was the son of Sarah and Biggs Gaskins.

He married in Craven Co., NC, February 16, 1893, Mary J. "Molly" Hartley, daughter of Mary Jane Fulcher Hartley (1838 - 1917) and John Hartley (1839 - 1902). Mary was born in Craven Co., NC, Dec 18, 1870; died at age 70 years in New Bern, NC, July 20, 1941.

Redding's parents were listed in the 1870 US Census in Township 2, Craven Co., NC, as Biggs Gaskins, 22, m, Farmer; and Sarah Gaskins, 25, f, Keeping House; both born in NC.
