Mr. Shanks died at his residence.
He was born to Grover Cleveland Shanks and Maudie Luce Shanks. After living and working in the Houston area for 33 years he retired close to home in Grapeland. He became a loved member of the First United Methodist Church and spent many days cooking briskets and participating in various fund raisers.
Elbert served in the United States Navy aboard the aircraft USS Kearsarge.
His annual fish fry for friends and family will always be fondly remembered. He was an avid sportsman and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. His sons always remember "never having the nicest boat, but always having the most fish." The love of these two hobbies is carried on by his sons, son-in-law and grandchildren today. One of his favorite hobbies was his garden. When one wasn't big enough, he added a second. The crops of tomatoes, corn, potatoes, squash and other vegetables will be missed and remembered.
He leaves a wonderful legacy that is carried on by his children and grandchildren.
Mr. Shanks was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Irene Williams and Genevive Gates; three brothers, Paige Shanks, Dean Lakey and J. C. Lakey.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Sims Shanks; daughter Dana Sue Akers and husband Dale; sons, Gary Elbert Shanks and wife Chaille and Rodney Glynn Shanks and wife Karly; a brother G. C. Shanks and wife Earlene; grandchildren, Mark Shanks, Nicholas Shanks, Michael Akers, Amie Akers, Sadie Shanks, Hunter Shanks, Aiden Shanks, Kevin Orr and Kyle Orr; one great grandchild, Alivia Shanks.
