Al was raised in North Little Rock and Conway Arkansas. He saw his father and 4 year old brother get hit and killed by a train right in front of his bus stop when he was 11 years old. He married Mary Wiseman when he was 18 and Mary was 16. Together they raised 1 son and 4 daughters and has 11 grandchildren. He missed Mary terribly when she died 16 years before he passed.
