Soviet General. He is best remembered as the commanding officer that ordered the shoot down of Korean Airlines Flight 007 over Soviet airspace in September 1983 killing 269 passengers and crew. He joined the Russian military in 1938 and trained as a gunnery specialist. He served as an engineer on both the Western and Karelian fronts during the Second World War and as an assistant to the chief of staff of the 32nd army. He became a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in the early 1970's and was appointed Minister of Defense shortly thereafter. In 1977 he was promoted to the Rank of Hero of the Soviet Union. He was a two time recipient of the Order of Lenin, a two time recipient of the Red Star, and received awards for the October Revolution and the Order of the Red Banner for meritorious service to the Russian motherland.
