Soviet General. He was the former head of the Soviet Union’s strategic nuclear missile forces. He joined the Red Army in 1920 and fought against anti-Soviet forces during the Russian Civil War. He was appointed commander of the 51st artillery division during the Soviet-Finnish War. Following the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, he was appointed to several field commands including commander of the First Anti-Tank Brigade and commander of the 38th and 40th Army divisions. He participated in the battles of Moscow, Stalingrad and Kursk and was an instrumental force in driving the German Armies from the occupied regions of Poland, Czechoslovakia and the Ukraine. He was rewarded with the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his leadership and battlefield successes against the Germans and was promoted to Marshall of the Soviet Union following the Second World War. In 1960 he was appointed Commander in Chief of Strategic Missile Forces and in 1962 he was promoted to Inspector General of the Ministry of Defense.
