James was the seventh of fifteen children born to Rev. Walter Foss and his wife Dorcas Morrison. His father built the chapel and laid out this cemetery. James made a living as a cooper.

He enlisted in the 44th Regiment Mass. Volunteers, and later in CO I MA 59th Regiment. He died in the McDougal hospital, which was a Civil War hospital located at Fort Schuyler, Bronx, New York.

The Leeds town history says he died of wounds received in Newbern, North Carolina, whereas U.S. military adjunct records say that he was wounded, but he died of disease.
