Soviet Army Marshal. He served in the First World War as a non commissioned officer before joining the Bolshevik Party and Red Army in 1917. He served in the Russian Civil War fighting anti-Soviet forces for which he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner on two separate occasions. He played significant roles in the battles of Moscow, Stalingrad and Kursk and served in the Byelorussia, east Prussian and Pomeranian theaters. He was arrested and imprisoned during the party purges of the 1930’s before being released following the German Invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. His greatest military success came during the battle of Stalingrad directing the Soviet Red Armies of the Don River, trapping and destroying 22 divisions of the German Sixth Army. In 1944 he was awarded the title of Marshal of the Soviet Union and in 1949 he was named Soviet defense minister and chairman of the Council of Ministers.
