SFC William Clarence Childs (Retired), 81, of Palatka, entered the sunset of life on Wednesday, February 2, 2000, at Integrated Health Services, Gainesville following an extended illness.

A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he had resided in Palatka for 18 years coming from Columbia, South Carolina. He was educated in the Philadelphia District School System. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving his country for over 28 years, retiring in 1971 as an E-7. He received several military commendations including the Good Conduct and Occupation Medals. He was a member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, Hastings and served as Steward Pro-tem and a member of the Lay Organization. He was Mt. Zion's 1997 Layman of the year. He was the Director of the Willie Varnes Outreach Soup Kitchen. He was a Master chef. He enjoyed traveling, football and boxing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Valerie Peeples and Jake and Alice Childs. His beloved wife, Lois Mae Lymas Childs preceded him in death on Sunday, September 13, 1998.

To cherish his memories are his two sons, Ralph (Nereyda) Lymas of Karnack, Texas and Alvin Lymas Sr. of Palatka; daughters, Felecia (Jesse) Milton of Gainesville, Rhonda (David) Whitley of Ft. Benning, Ga., and Odessa (Nathaniel) Thompson of Philadelphia; grandchildren, Alvin Lymas Jr. of Palatka, Jelecia Milton, Andre Childs of Gainesville, Monica, Renada, Daniell Lymas of Karnack, Texas, Halle and Camden Whitley of Ft. Benning, Ga., Vonnie (Dwayne) Bivings and Pamela Stevens of Philadelphia; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Myrtice Dailey of St. Augustine and Bessie M. Brown of Armstrong; mother-in-law, Clara Sanders of Hastings; sisters-in-law, Leria (John) Peeples of Hastings, Annie L. Peeples of Armstrong, Madeline (Curtis) Holtz of St. Augustine; a host of nieces and nephews, including nephew and God-son, Master William Clarence Peeples; several special friends, Nathaniel Jones of Hastings, William Niblock and Frank Boller of Columbia, S.C.; cousins, God-children, other relatives and dear friends.
