Son of John H & Mary E (Thomason) Burks. He moved with his family to Atlanta GA just after the turn of the century. By 1940 he was living in Columbia SC working as a foreman with the railroad.
Charles had older half siblings, Allie Tallula Burks, Luther Julian Burks, and William Burks, by his father's first marriage to Sarah Ann Elizabeth Pattillo. His siblings were James Clifton Burks and Andrew Jackson Burks.
His grandparents were Henry & Elizabeth Burks of Stockbridge GA. His great grandparents were Elisha & Patience (Dunston) Burks.
Charles and his wife, Annie, were the parents of Horace, Charles, Robert, George Jackson, Edna, Mary, and Bettie.

Charlie Sphere Burks, 66, retired Southern Railway employee, died at his residence, 2209 Adams street at 8:30 Wednesday night after several years of declining health for the past several years.
He was born in Rockdale County, Georgia, and was a member of the Colonial Heights Baptist Church.
Before retiring several years ago he had been Round House foreman with the Southern Railroad for 51 years. He was a member of the A E Minor Masonic Lodge in Atlanta, Ga, having served as Worshipful Master of this lodge for several years. He was a member of the Sheet Metal workers Lodge No 167.
He is survived by three daughters, Mrs R C Dominy of Columbia, Mrs D B Lewis of Miami and Mrs John Lemacks of Walterboro; four sons, George J Burks, Robert L Burks and Charlie H Burks, all of Columbia, and W H Burks of Atlanta, Ga; one brother, Jim Burks of Atlanta; ten grandchildren, one niece and one nephew.
Funeral services will be held from the Talbert Funeral Home at 5 o'clock Friday afternoon by Dr Stephen Zukor, Pastor of the Colonial Heights Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers will be O W Wolfe, J R Robertson, J H Little, CC B Newman, Evan Watson and Dewey Sharpe.
Honorary pallbearers will be J N Harling, N S Emrie, L W Sharpe, H E Coleman, Dr L V Jowers, E G Stevens, Sr, R C Robertson and employees of the Round House of the Southern Railroad at Andrews Yard.
