Mary was the only girl among 5 brothers, children of Joseph L. Hoch and Anna Zolnowsky Hoch of Tyndall, SD. She graduated in accounting from Marquette and married Carl F. Bretzke in 1949. Widowed in 1957 she raised her two children James and Ann as a single parent. She was the treasurer of the Howard Company, a point-of-sale advertising company in Milwaukee and a few months before her death when she married a business associate Elmer Rulf. She died of pancreatic cancer.
