Composer. Born in Mülheim am Rhein, Germany, he was noted as a writer of home spun folk tunes and carnival songs. In 1895, he was a member of an amateur theater group, where he gained experience as a puppeteer in the theater, plus wrote poems and songs. His first song “The Deutz Marksmen” (1899), brought him success in music halls and theaters. By the early 1900s, he was booked by an agency for performances throughout Germany. Ostermann won the award for best song in Cologne dialect in 1908, with his song, “Who Would Have Thought of the Aunt”. Through the 1920s, he published over 100 popular songs, wrote songs for revue films, plus sold recordings for waltz songs with popular themes such as "Rhine", "Wine", "Woman" and "Singing". He died following severe stomach surgery at age 59 in Cologne, Germany and at his funeral on August 10, 1936, 35,000 spectators lined the procession.
