Founder of Wengert's Dairy (now Swiss Premium, a subsidiary of Dean Foods Inc.)

Samuel K. Wengert was one of ten children born to Rev. Adam and Mary Spayd Wengert, and the only son to have children. He grew up on a farm with a father who also served as a preacher (later Bishop of a Brinserite group called United Zion's Children). He spoke Pennsylvania Dutch (German) while growing up, but he and his wife later decided not to raise their children bi-lingual. Sam graduated from Annville High School and Millersville State College. After teaching at the Ebenezer School, he was employed at Northside Bank. He was married to Ada Risser Horst on June 12, 1923 at the home of her parents, Harry and Ella Risser Horst. His great uncle Rev. Maurice Spayd performed the ceremony. In 1931 he founded Wengert's Dairy on property owned by his wife Ada's family. His lifelong friend Walter Lehman loaned him some of the capital to start his business. Wengert's milk was consistently one of the highest rated in the mid-Atlantic region. The company was one of the first to market lowfat milk and produce 'tea cooler.'

Sam was the proud father of eight children. All four of his sons were at some time employed by the dairy. He was asked to select the names for his last three children. After Ada named their children J. Romaine, Harlan, Kenneth, Louise, and Clifford- Sam decided he wanted 'simple' names for the youngest. He named them John, Joan, and Jane. He attended Trinity United Methodist Church (formerly Trinity Evangelical United Brethren). While continuing to expand his dairy, Sam served as County Commissioner from 1948-1952. He also served as president of Family and Children's Services.

He was on the Board of Directors of Lebanon Community College and a director and vice president of Lebanon Valley National Bank. Sam was lifelong Kiwanis Club member, serving as President and presented with the Distinguished Service Award in 1975. He was also a 32nd degree Mason.

Sam was a kind and generous Christian man who read the bible every day of his life. He and his wife Ada traveled to the Holy Lands, Switzerland, Canada, Hawaii, and all over the United States. They enjoyed wintering in Florida where one of their daughters lived. Ada died in 1975, and Sam married Anna Cassel in 1978. He loved to sit on the patio listening to baseball games on the radio while smoking his cigar. A lifelong Phillies fan, Sam passed away in his home while watching them winning the world series on television.
