AUSSEMS, Hermina Catherina (Baars), September 9, 1919 - April 30, 2011.
Hermina was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands to Johannes and Hermina Baars. She was one of eight children. She made her journey to heaven from Tucson, AZ. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 years, Gerard; her twin daughters, Monique and Hermina and her granddaughter, Michele Aussems. She is survived by her sons, Nicolaas (Connie) of Tucson and John (Andrea) of Hackettstown, NJ; grandchildren, Deborah Roth (Arthur) of Glendale, AZ and Nicholas Aussems of Tucson, Joshua (Krissy), Hali, Amanda and Noah Aussems of Hackettstown, NJ; great- grandsons, Christopher Roth of Glendale and Grayson Aussems of Washington, NJ and her brother, Jan Baars (Trudy) of Hawthorne, NJ; nieces and nephews in New Jersey, The Netherlands and France. She was a member of a Dutch resistance group know as CS-6 in Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation. Her involvement landed her in concentration camp Vught in the Netherlands. She was awarded the Resistance Remembrance Cross for her activities during the war by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in 1983. The family emigrated to the U.S in 1957 and settled in Hawthorne and Midland Park, NJ. In 1978 she moved to Tucson. In Tucson she became involved with Jewish Federation Holocaust survivor program. She gave talks about her experience in the concentration camp for 18 years at local schools, the University of Arizona, the University of Colorado and KUAT TV. She was interviewed by the Spielberg Holocaust Project and her story is available in the National Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. Services are as follows: Visitation will be at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge on Tuesday, May 3, 2011, 7:00 p.m. -9:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 300 N. Tanque Verde Loop Rd. on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. with burial following the Mass at All Faiths Cemetery, 2151 S. Avenida Los Reyes. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Peppi's Hospice, 2715 N. Wyatt Dr., Tucson, AZ 85712.
