Professional Soccer Player. FIFA World Cup Champion 1954. For almost his entire career (1941 to 1959), he played as a center forward for 1 FC Kaiserslautern. He is remembered for being one of the players of the German National Football Team (along with his older brother Fritz) who won the 1954 FIFA World Cup held in Switzerland. He made a name for himself during World War II where he served in the Kriegsmarine, but also played soccer, playing first with SV Cuxhaven (1942 to 1943) and then with Holstein Kiel (1943). During World War II, he was wounded in action and was forced to play with an injured knee due to which he had to undergo several surgical operations, even after the war. This episode did not prevent him from continuing a successful football career, and later, he played in 321 games with the 1 FC Kaiserslautern, scoring 336 goals and winning the German league in 1951 and 1953. Walter played in 5 of the 6 games played by Germany national football team at the 1954 FIFA World Cup, including the final 3-2 victory against Hungary. In total, he played 20 times for Germany, scoring 10 goals. He died from complications due to Alzheimer's disease.
