Astronomer. She was Director of the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) from 1973 until her death, a period of 31 years. One of its most beloved and charismatic leaders, Dr. Mattei was responsible for guiding the organization during a period of phenomenal growth in its number of observers, database of observations, and particularly its international presence, made possible through the communication advances of the internet age. She was an acknowledged expert on variable stars and authored dozens of research papers published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. In addition, her abilities to relate to and earn the respect of both amateur and professional astronomers contributed to the major development of pro-am collaborations in research on variable stars. She thus greatly expanded the possibilities for amateur observers with modest or homemade equipment to contribute to scientific knowledge and publish in professional astronomical journals.
