WELLS - Lyman Silas "Steve" Severson of Wells died on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at Marquette General Hospital of a lengthy illness.

Known as a caring, devout Christian of extraordinary honor and integrity, he was also a veteran of three wars - World War II, Korea and Vietnam. "Steve" Severson, as he was nicknamed, was born in Fergus Falls, Minn., and grew up in nearby Staples. He always had a great love for the outdoors and often made a few extra dollars when he was young trapping, hunting and fishing. He graduated from Staples High in 1941.

After World War II broke out, he joined the Marines and was soon island-hopping in the South Pacific in places like the Solomons and the Gilberts. Steve was with the Fourth Marines and supported the 13th Marine Air Group on Funafuti and Majuro. He was redeployed to North Carolina in '44 and expected to be part of the invasion of Japan in 1945. Every Marine at the time figured they would be part of this offensive with very high numbers of casualties an absolute certainty. In May of 1945, he married another Marine, Stephanie (Sadie) Virginia Luchay, originally from Perronville, while waiting for that next deployment. But Truman and the atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki changed all that, as it changed history for a bunch of Marines and the world.

Lyman Silas "Steve" Severson

He and his young family resettled in the late 40s after the war in Bertha, Minn. They farmed for a few years before military service called him again. This time he joined the Army. He was inserted into the Pusan Perimeter in Korea with the 25th Infantry Division. This was before the Breakout and he was then part of the move north to the Chinese border. Steve was sent back to the States to go to Officer Candidate School in 1951 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1952. He spent 17 years as an officer before he retired in 1969 - 27 seven years of total service. But this was not before the Army extracted one more war tour out of him to go to Vietnam in 1967 and 1968. That enabled him to endure another key piece of history - the Tet Offensive. Among his many awards and citations were the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, World War II, Korea and Vietnam War Campaign ribbons.

After he retired, Steve and Stevie bought a farm in Minnesota before moving to Powers and buying yet another farm. They continued to farm actively until just a couple of years ago, well after most would have fully retired. He and Stephanie would have celebrated their 65th anniversary next month.

Steve is survived by his wife, Stephanie "Stevie" "Sadie" of Wells; son, Richard (Judy of Iraq) of Afghanistan; daughters, Shirley (Richard) Haiar of Wilson and Joni McCoy of Escanaba; grandchildren, Carl Keppard, Karyn Poupore, Amy Haiar, Sharyn Trinko, Bob Wodrazka, Mike Wodrazka, Tiffany Severson and Weston Severson; great grandchildren, Jena, Devin, Cynthia, Stephanie, Isabella and Cameron.

Steve is preceded by his parents and a brother.

Visitation will be on Monday, April 19, from 9 to 11 a.m. with a Patriot Guard Flag Line at the Bark River Bible Church with the funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Bradley Cochrane officiating.

Full military rites will be held immediately following the funeral service at the church.

A Patriot Guard escort from the church to Gardens of Rest Cemetery will begin at 1:30 p.m.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Severson family.
