Journalist. He was the son of Evelyn and Arnold Katske and was raised on Long Island, New York. After his father's death, his mother changed the family surname to Arnold. While still in high school, he was a copy boy at the "New York Times". In 1945 he dropped out of school to enlist in the Army. He earned his high school diploma in the military and a bachelor's degree from what was then Adelphi College in Garden City, on Long Island, New York. He was a reporter for "Newsday" and the "New York Herald Tribune" before joining the reporting staff of the "New York Times" in 1959 where his assignments took him around the world. In 1968 he received the "George Polk Award" for Political Reporting. In a 40 year career with the newspaper he was an editor for "New York Times Magazine"; he oversaw coverage of the news media; beginning in October 1997, he wrote a column "Making Books", about the publishing industry. His his last column was #212 which appeared in March 2003. His marriage ended in divorce in the early 1980s. At 84 years old he passed away at his home from complications of Parkinson's disease. His obituary was published in the "New York Times" on June 6, 2013.
