It has been one week. Feels like an eternity
and at the same time a flash in time.

I still feel his presence everywhere I go.

September 23, 1996 when I picked him up
along with his calico "sister"-
he was such a little individual.
Very feisty but very very loving.
So small I could hold him in the palm
of my hand to try to apply the drops
the rescue league gave me for his ear mites.
I ended up using a cotton swab dabbed
in olive oil, and the mites
were gone in two days.

He didn't meow for almost 10 years.
The day his sister Autumn Sonata
left us he meowed the most mournful sound.
And purr! his purr was so tiny
and muted you had to pick him up
and hold him to your ear!
But then his purr developed
and his climbing abilities
out did any jumping cat.

He was there with me all the time.
A soft grey grand companion,
who with a side glance
could melt your heart
and ease your pain.

He loved to go in the car
on errands with me.
And a road trip! oh boy
he loved the trip to Attleboro.
The ride back he sat erect in
the front seat watching the traffic.
He let out these tiny noises
when he thought I didn't see a red light.
He was right.

He loved birds, spiders and chewing
on anything!
I noticed a few months ago
as he was napping in the
stall shower, that he
had little teeth marks
all along the edge of
the shower curtain.
I thought I needed a new shower
curtain.
I think not.
He loved to rest on
the keyboard.
If I was reading
in the recliner,
that was his cue to
jump up and join
me.Either lying by
my side or on my
legs so I could
NOT move.
Leaving or entering
a room I would
always call out
to him.And he would
reply with a look
or a mew.

No more.

In 2008 , my mother was dying.
I was her care giver.
At night towards the end
Mom would lie in the bed
in the living room with
her head propped
so she would not choke. I slept
beside her in a recliner.
Dorian sat erect at the foot
of her bed watching.
Sometimes her head would slip.
If I happened to doze off,
Dorian would let out a
loud meow and wake me up
so I could adjust the pillow.
He watched over both of us.
And was a comfort to me for 17 years.

I mourn his loss.
I also am sad that he will be
my last pet.Getting older,
and probably without a car
in the future. I cannot see having
the responsibility of a cat.
If something should happen
I would feel so helpless,
and heartbroken if I had
to give a kitty up.

So Dorian was the perfect last pet.
The best to remember
and hold in my heart
forever along side
Nucha and Autumn.

Yesterday while gardening, walking back from watering the marigolds out by the mailbox I saw a catbird in the old birdbath. I slowly approached and he fluttered over to the new birdbath. Took a sip and then flew up to the top of the fence and looked at me and sang.I shed many tears for my 3 precious kitties then. First sighting of a cat bird here since April 2009.
