He enlisted in the Army during World War 1 and was assigned to the 324 Field Artillery. He went to France as part of the American Expeditionary Forces where he fought in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive to break the Hindenburg Line. He was wounded and died on 27 October 1918, just a couple of weeks before the end of the war. He was originally buried at Glorieux Meuse Military Cemetery Grave 11 Row 8.
Military records show he left a wife in Toledo, Ohio, Mrs. W. H. Abele.
