Mrs. Emily Mavis (Wiggs) Hammond of Essex departed from this earth on May 19, 2013, following a short illness.

She was born in Johnston County, N.C., in 1923. She was a graduate of Rex Hospital School of Nursing (now part of the North Carolina State University). She and her family relocated to Essex, Md., in 1953, where she resided until her death.

Mrs. Hammond was the school nurse at Middlesex Elementary School for a brief period. She worked at Church Home and Franklin Square Hospitals for many years, retiring from Franklin Square in 1986.

She was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church since 1953.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Graham Hammond.

Mrs. Hammond is survived by three daughters, Patricia Ann Hammond of Triangle, Va., Faye Hammond of Perry Hall, and Gail Dickson of Towson; a stepson, Johnny Graham Hammond Jr. of Broadway, N.C.; two sisters, Hazel Cooper of Salem, Ore., and Frances Stevens of Grantham, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Greta Holliday of Wilmington, N.C.

She is also survived by three grandchildren, Angela Bowers of Lillington, N.C., John Graham Hammonds III, of Broadway, N.C., and Jacqueline Bennett of Martinsburg, W.Va. Additionally, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

A Memorial Service will be at Tabernacle Baptist Church at 12:30 p.m. June 2.

The family has requested donations to Tabernacle Baptist Church, 121 Bennett Road, Baltimore, MD, 21221 in lieu of flowers.
