Vernon Ray Browning was the son of Goldie E. Smith, 1903 (Texas) and Johnnie William Browning, Sr., 1902 (Texas). He was the seventh child and third son of eight children born to them.

Vernon married Miss Barbara Ann Meadows on September 2, 1954 in Dallas, Texas and four children were born of their union. They made their home and reared their family in Mesquite, Dallas County, Texas. They were active members of the Mimosa Lane Baptist Church.

Vernon died of a heart attack while undergoing chemo treatment for cancer. He is survived by his wife, four children and their respective spouses, several grandchildren, a great-grandchild, two siblings, many nephews and nieces, a large extended family and numerous friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Goldie E. Smith and Johnnie W. Browning; brother, J.W. Browning; sisters, Helen Browning, Fay Blackshear, Billie Taylor; and granddaughter, Courtney Cain.
