Darryl Marquis Williams (known as 'Skip') was born February 13, 1954 to the late Catherine Elizabeth Williams (nee Sumner) and the late Walter Williams, in Harlem Hospital, New York City. Raised in Harlem, he attended the New York City public school system, and also attended the J.T. Barber School in New Bern, North Carolina for some of his high school education. Since New Bern was the birthplace and also summertime destination of the Sumner and Williams families, whenever Skip found himself 'down south', his smile was brighter, and there was an extra 'skip' in his step. New Bern was truly his 'home away from home'.

Darryl went into the Armed Forces at age 24, learning what he could to help better serve his country. He gave his best to the Army until his discharge in April, 1979. Returning to New York, he secured a job in the NYC Housing Authority, and also spent some time as a security guard at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City.
Darryl loved sports, was extremely athletic and proud of it. He often boasted about his fitness and, unlike some people who boast without backup, he proved every boast when displaying his cardio strength, his long distance stamina and his weightlifting prowess. He also loved to dance and sing; his favorite style of music was R&B from the 70's and 80's. Many in the family and also many of his friends would say that when Skip showed up to a gathering, he became the life of the party; he was also well known for his love of talking, and his edgy sense of humor.
Darryl moved from Harlem to Raleigh, NC in 1998, to be closer to his mother Catherine. During this time he became a cook at North Carolina State University's Campus Caf?, and was also a part time handy man with Cue Moore Enterprises. Darryl was not afraid to get his hands dirty, and could accomplish a good day's work once he set his mind to it.

Darryl fell victim to heart disease in the winter of 2012, which persisted despite his valiant efforts to resume the life to which he had grown accustomed. Yet the illness proved stronger than his resolve.

Darryl went to sleep on May 2, 2013, 10:45 AM, in the hospice unit at Durham's VA Hospital.

Darryl is survived by: three sisters, Ms. Sandra Williams of New York, NY, Mrs. Shernice Newman (nee Williams) (Melvin) of Beltville, Maryland, Mrs. Sonnae Scott (nee Taylor) of Clinton, Maryland, and one adoptive sister, Ms. Shanequa Smith (Sumner); one brother, Mr. Walter T.
