Dickie, age 13, died in a plane crash in Berg, Belgium. Sabena Airlines Flight 548 was en route from New York City to Brussels, Belgium when it crashed on its approach to land at Brussels' Zaventem Airport. Dickie's father, Edward LeMaire, age 36, also died in the plane crash.

The entire United States Figure Skating team on its way to the 1961 World Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia was killed in the horrific crash.
