For twelve seasons (1963 to 1974), he played at the defensive tackle and defensive end positions in the American and National Football Leagues with the Oakland Raiders, Buffalo Bill, Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers. Born David Joseph Costa, he attended Saunders Trade and Tech High School where he made his initial mark on the gridiron as he earned All-City honors while contributing to his school's capturing of the city title. After playing collegiate football at the University of Utah, he was selected by the Raiders during the 7th-round of the 1963 AFL Draft. Costa played in 168 total career games consecutively and achieved Pro-Bowl honors four-times (1963 and 1967 to 1969).
