John V. Harriger, 85, of Mayport, died suddenly at his home on Tuesday evening, May 21, 2013. He was born on Nov. 3, 1927, in Alcola, the son of Ernest and Lula (Bish) Harriger.

He was first married to Mae (Himes), and she preceded him in death. He then married Dorothy (Brocious), who survives.

John served his country during World War II with the United States Army. He was a member of the Langville Methodist Church until it closed, and he went to North Freedom United Methodist Church. He enjoyed going to church, music and doing wood crafts.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Mayport; a son, Randy Harriger and wife Mona of Pansy; a daughter, Kathy Cooper of Troutville; two stepsons, Floyd Himes and wife Debbie and Melvin Himes, both of Punxsutawney; four stepdaughters, LaVonne Best and husband Gerald of Ringgold, Barb Farster and husband Mike of Punxsutawney, Helen Kennedy and husband Russ of Mayport and Kathy Himes of Brookville; three grandchildren; 14 step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 15 step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and first wife, Mae, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Clyde Harriger, Sylvester "Bus" Harriger and an infant; and five sisters, Annie Barkefelt, Nellie Barkefelt, Elizabeth Bowersox, Mary Swineford and an infant.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, May 24, 2013, at the Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn.

The funeral service will be at noon on Friday, May 24, 2013, at the funeral home with Pastor Joan Rousseaux officiating.

Interment will be in the Ringgold Cemetery.
