Leo Elliott Owens, 77, of Crescent died Monday at his residence.

A lifelong resident of McIntosh County, Mr. Owens was a World War II Army veteran, having served in the European Theater. He served as a McIntosh County Deputy Sheriff for 32 years and was a former chief of the Darien Police Department. Mr. Owens retired from Glynco Naval Base as a structural firefighter. He was a past master of Darien Masonic Lodge No. 137, F. & A.M., a member of Allee Shrine Temple and the V.F.W. and president of the McIntosh County Farm Bureau. Mr. Owens was a member of the First Baptist Church of Darien and the Men's Sunday School Class.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Darien with the Rev. Dr. Michael Warren and the Rev. Henderson H. McQuaig officiating.

Burial will follow in St. Andrew's Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home.

Surviving are his wife, Corabelle Bacon Owens of Crescent; three sons, Marshall Lumley of Fayetteville, N.C., and Ronnie Owens and Darrell Owens, both of Crescent; a daughter, Linda DeLoach of Shellman Bluff; four brothers, Ludwig L. Owens of Brunswick, Coleman Owens of Townsend, Wayne Owens of Hendersonville, Tenn., and Martin Owens of Jacksonville; four sisters, Carolyn Stokes of Ludowici, Lois Franklin of Brunswick, Louise Sapp of Hinesville and Edwardine Welty of Sweet Home, Ore.; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
