Bette Mae O'Neil was born to Thomas and Elizabeth (Brown) O'Neil, in Sherman Township, Huron, Michigan. Bette Mae was the youngest of 6 children (James Alfred, Gladys, Genevieve, Helene Margaret, Morris "Bud", Bette Mae).

Bette Mae's confirmation name (in honor of her mother) was Elizabeth, which was a name she used often in life since it sounded more 'formal'.

She married William Arnold Silverthorn 17 Aug 1946 and had 5 children: Cassandra Josephine (1947), Cynthia Sue (1948), William Darrel (1951), Mary Elizabeth (1954) & Joel David (1959). All were born in Detroit except for Joel who was born in Port Huron, St Clair County. In the early 60's, the family moved to Ft Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida, later moving to Plantation of the same county. Later in life, William and Bette lived in Ormond Beach near Daytona before moving to Land of Lakes, and then finally Zephyrhills, Florida.
