William was the son of Elizabeth Maxwell & Lewis Wiley Gilstrap. Soon after he was born the family moved to Pickens County, S. C. There he married Delilah Durham and they moved to Forsythe County, Georgia in 1858. Delilah probably died in Pickens County, s. c., or shortly after their arrival in Forsythe County. They had 8 children. He married Elizabeth Lewis in 1859 or 1860 and they had four children. Elizabeth and all children are named in his will - Charles Abney, Mary Ann Smith, Martha Evaline Louis, John Louis, Malinda Jane Tomlin, Bright Nelson, William Maxwell, Louisa Josephene Gilstrap, Henry Banster, Sarah Emelissa Gilstrap, Nancy Elvira Gilstrap, James Pledger Anthony. They lived in the Northwest section of Forsythe County very close to the Cherokee County line.

During the War Between the States, William served in Co. C. Georgia State Guard Forsythe County, Cherokee Legion from July 22, 1863 to January 22, 1864. He was then in Co. K 3rd Regt. 2nd Brigade 1st Div. Georgia State Troops, 2nd Sgt. October 8, 1861, mustered out April 1862. Enlisted Pvt. 56th Ga. Regt. Infantry Co. D. May 8, 1862 appointed 1st Sgt. Captured Vicksburg, Mississippi July 4, 1863. No later record.
