STANSBURY, LIDA CATHERINE CROUCH, 104, of Mt. Washington, widow of Clarence Lane Stansbury, passed away from this life to her eternal Heavenly home on May 11, 2013 at Wesley Manor Hoskinson House in Louisville, KY.

In addition to her husband, Lida was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Dudley Crouch and Oakley Ferguson Crouch; brothers, R.E. Crouch and Marcus Crouch; a sister, Annetta Crouch Rouse; and a nephew, Marcus Crouch.

Mrs. Stansbury was a fourth generation Kentuckian. Her ancestor, Enoch Smith, traveled with Daniel Boone as they entered Kentucky from Stafford County, Virginia, through the Cumberland Gap. Mr. Smith eventually settled in Montgomery County where his great granddaughter, Lida, was born. She moved to the Fairfield area as a young girl where she graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1924. She was also a graduate of Hamilton College in 1926 and Transylvania University in 1928. Upon graduation, she was employed as a teacher in Bullitt County. She lived and worked in Mt. Washington where she taught full time and then substituted for many years. By the time of her retirement, she was teaching the grandchildren of her first students, enriching their lives academically, socially, and spiritually. Her love and interest in her students reached far beyond the classroom walls.

Lida was a charter member of the Bullitt County Extension Homemakers where she served as an officer on the county and local levels. She was also a member of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Stansbury, a long time member of Mt. Washington United Methodist Church, taught Sunday school for 63 years. She was a very active member of United Methodist Women.

Hobbies included reading, gardening, all forms of hand work, wood work and cooking; for all she was well known throughout the community for outstanding fruits of her labor.

To celebrate her life accomplishments, she was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel on her 100th birthday. That day was also declared "Lida Stansbury Day" by the cities of Mt. Washington and Louisville.

Mrs. Stansbury's love and presence will be missed by friends at Wesley Manor, where she made her home for 9 ½ years, loved ones from Mt. Washington, where she resided for 67 years, and members of the Mt. Washington United Methodist Church.

Her "adopted children" are Lou McAlister, Mt. Washington, KY; Harry and Sharon Feeback, Carlisle, KY, Howard Jones, Harrisburg, PA,; Bob and Betty Austin, Kuttawa, KY, Sam "Smitty" and Debra Francis, Henderson, KY, and Phillip (Linda) Shaw, Mt. Washington, KY.

She is also survived by nephews, Dr. Robert (Bick Tien) Rouse, Stanford, CA, Dr. Joseph (Yoko) Rouse, Yigo Guam; niece, Marianne (Tim) Chung, Honolulu, HI and Irene Crouch (widow of Marcus), Bloomfield, KY. She was blessed by five great nephews, Nicholas, Masami, Akashi, Aaron and Ben Rouse; two great nieces, Aimee Chung Sutherin and Liensa Rouse; and one great-great nephew, Daniel Kaalakea. In addition, she is survived by cousins, Kay Ferguson Armstrong (Ben), James H Ferguson (Laura) both of Louisville, Alvin Ferguson Elkin (Peggy), of Charlotte, NC, and Judith Elkin Butler of Martinez, CA.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at McFarland-Troutman-Proffitt Funeral Home, Mt. Washington, with burial in the Mt. Washington Cemetery. Visitation will be noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 9 a.m. Thursday.

Active casket bearers will be Dr. Julia Wilson, Nannette Feeback, Rosa Doxtater, Michelle Wilford, Dr. Richard Austin and Brent Shaw.
