Dorothy E. "Dottie" Smith, 84, a longtime resident of Brookston, passed away at 9:10 p.m. Thursday, May 9, 2013 at St. Elizabeth East Hospital in Lafayette.
She was born December 31, 1928 in Fowler, Indiana to the late Elmer and Astrid Bengston and was a 1946 graduate of Brookston High School.
Her marriage was to Phillip "Mel" Smith on August 13, 1950 in Brookston. He preceded her in death on December 18, 1982.
Mrs. Smith owned and operated Smith's Town Shoppe in Brookston, opening in November 4, 1970. They expanded to open a Fowler location in 1976 and a Monon location in 1978. In October of 1998 after nearly 30 years the stores closed.
Afterwards she was a Assistant Bailiff for Tippecanoe County A longtime member of the Brookston Federated Church, she began attending the Brookston United Methodist Church after she became the Pastor's Secretary for the last several years.
Dottie was an influential part of the Brookston community where she and three other business women started the Apple Popcorn Festival in 1978. She also started the Brookston Alumni Banquet in 1988 and was a member of Psi Iota Xi Sorority.
Surviving are her sons, Greg Smith (wife: Lynn) of Brookston, Todd Smith (wife: Diane) of Battle Ground, Kris Smith (wife: Susan) of Burnettsville and Chip Smith of West Lafayette; and two brothers, Herb Bengston (wife: Betty) of Monticello and Lloyd Bengston (wife: Nancy) of Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Dottie loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, Shelley, Nathan, Jason, Kelly, Kylee, Jessie, Natalie, Travis, Holly, Justin, Jared, Jocelyn and her 15 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death with her parents and husband is her son, Mark.
Friends may call from 3 - 8 p.m. Monday, May 13, 2013 at Brookston United Methodist Church. Funeral service there 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2013 with Rev. Tom Watt and Rev. Dr. Lelan D. McReynolds to officiate. Interment to follow in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens Mausoleum, West Lafayette.
