81, died June 1, 2000 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Walnut, NC. Mrs. Shupe taught school in Madison County, NC and Baltimore, MD for 31 years and served as director of the Madison County Counsel on Aging. She initiated the idea in Madison County of a country library and served as the first Chairman of the Library Board of Trustees. During her career she was Secretary of the north Carolina Organization of Home Demonstration Clubs, named 'Woman of the Week' by the Asheville Citizen newspaper and coached basketball teams for Walnut and Marshall High School. Her biography was included in North Carolina Lives and Who's Who. She was past president of the retired teachers association. Mrs. Shupe for many years authored a weekly column for The News-Record called 'Just a Woman's Observation' and was a feature writer for the Asheville Citizen Times. She was past president of the Madison County Democratic Women's Club. She served as a volunteer at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC. She served as a member of the Western Carolina University Alumni Board. She was a member of the Walnut Missionary Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, George Barton Shupe, her daughter and son-in-law Charlotte and Jim Eddings, and grandtwins Dorothy Caroline 'Dottie' Eddings and James Barton 'Jamie Eddings.
Funeral services for Mrs. Shupe were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 4, 2000 in the chapel of Madison Funeral Home. The Reverend Joe Tomberline officiated. A Eulogy was given by Mrs. Sandra Tolley. Interment followed in the Bryan Family Cemetery in Marshall, NC.
