She was the daughter of Ingeborg and Matt Wiggum, who met on the boat coming to America from Norway. They settled in Everett, Washington where the paper mill "smelled like money" and Matt worked as a machinist. Her honours included high school valedictorian and "Miss Everett" and "May Queen" of Linfield College. In 1941 she graduated from Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon where she had met classmate Homer Groening. He impressed her with his sense of humor and they married on Apr 11, 1942 in Everett, Washington. Before starting a family, she taught high school English and her love of language was apparent in the many Double-Crostics she completed (in ink). They raised their 5 children in Portland, Oregon and supported the Oregon Symphony and the Portland Trail Blazers - and many local yarn shops since she was a talented needlework artist. At 88 she still swam regularly at the Multnomah Athletic Club. Her husband died in 1996 and her oldest daughter, Patty, died in January 2013. She herself followed not long after, passing away peacefully in her sleep at 94 years old and was survived by her brother, children (Mark, Matt, Lisa and Maggie), 8 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. On May 6, 2013 her obituary was published in "The Oregonian" newspaper. Her son Matt Groening is the creator of the "Simpsons" cartoon and the names of his family members are reflected in the popular Simpsons family cartoon - Marge, Homer, Lisa, Maggie and Patty.
