Paoli, Chester Co., PA 20 Sept 1777

"The "tumulus" or cluster of graves in which the soldiers were interred, was enclosed with a substantial stone wall, forming a rectangle 60 feet long from north to south, by 20 feet wide, with a gate in the middle of the western side wall, and a marble monument, about 9 feet in height erected in the centre of the enclosure.

The dedication ceremonies were held 20 Sept 1817 at 11am at Paoli Tavern

These inscriptions, [except that on the east side] taken from the old monument, were written by Dr. William Darlington, who was the master spirit on the occasion of its erection in 1817

by British troops
under the
immediate command of
MAJOR GENERAL GREY

SOUTH SIDE

Here repose the remains
of fifty three
AMERICAN SOLDIERS
who were the
victims of cold-blooded cruelty
in the well known
"MASSACRE AT THE PAOLI"
while under the command
of
GENERAL ANTHONY WAYNE ,
an officer
whose military conduct,
bravery and humanity,
were equally conspicuous
throughout the
REVOLUTIONARY WAR

EAST SIDE

Erected by the citizens of
Chester and Delaware counties,
September 20, 1877, being
THE CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY
of the Paoli Massacre.

"The other Inscriptions on this monument are copied from the memorial stone formerly standing here, which was erected by the Republican Artillerists, and other Citizens of Chester County, September 20, 1817,"

Major Marien Lamar 4th PA "Bayonetted on horseback"-fell in the midst of the British retreat, His last words were, "Halt, boys, give these assassins one fire!". In honor of this martyr in the cause of liberty a township in Chester County was given his name.

On 21 Sept Joseph Cox a Willistown farmer made his way to his neighbor's farm of Ezekiel Bowen and Cromwell Pearce, the site of the Paoli Camp. The men were buried the next day in the field of Battle. They were gathered in a central location on the Bowen-Pearce property line, and interred in a trench about 12 by 60 feet. The soldiers were place in 2 rows of 26.

[1] Paoli Monument is the 2nd oldest war memorial in the United States.

[2] The original 1817 Monument was over 8 feet tall but vandalism over the decades resulted in the loss of the base and the capstone on which the original pyramid form was placed.
