GERALD BATES ASHBY--SPANISH FORK MAN DIES OF HEART AILMENT

SPANISH FORK--Gerald Bates Ashby, 47, Spanish Fork, died Wednesday at his home of a heart condition.

He was born January 8, 1918 in Payson, the son of Albert S. and Susan Bates. He married Phyllis Higginson, June 19, 1937, in Spanish Fork. The marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple May 1, 1943. Mr. Ashby was a railroad conductor for many years, at the Geneva Works of U. S. Steel Corp. He was a member of the Steel Workers Union. He was an elder in the LDS Church. Mr. Ashby received his education in the Payson City Schools. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and sports of all kinds.

Survivors include his wife of Spanish Fork; three sons, Blaine, Salt Lake City; David and Garth, both of Spanish Fork; two daughters, Marilyn and Ann, both of Spanish Fork; a grandson, parents of Payson: LaMar Ashby, San Lorenzo, California and a sister, Mrs. Dean (Karla) Holm, Provo.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Spanish Fork Fifth-Eighth LDS Ward Chapel with Bishop Leslie B. Winter officiating. Friends may call Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Our Chapel of Memories Mortuary, Spanish Fork and at the mortuary Saturday prior to services.

Burial will be in Spanish Fork City Cemetery.
