Roman Catholic Priest, Martyr. Born Anno Sjoerd Brandsma in a family of Frisian farmers, Brandsma joined the Carmelite Order in 1898, choosing the name Titus in honour of his father. Ordained a priest in 1905, he earned a doctorate in philosophy in Rome. He then taught in various schools in the Netherlands and was named professor of philosophy and of the history of mysticism at the Catholic University of Nijmegen, where he also served as Rector Magnificus. He was also a professional journalist and was appointed ecclesiastical advisor to Catholic journalists in 1935. Both before and during the Nazi occupation of The Netherlands in World War II, Brandsma fought against the spread of Nazi ideology and for the freedom of Catholic education and the Catholic press. For this he was arrested and sent to a succession of prisons and concentration camps, where he brought comfort and peace to his fellow prisoners. In 1942, after much suffering, he was killed by lethal injection at Dachau Concentration Camp. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on November 3rd, 1985. On May 15, 2022, Brandsma was canonised by Pope Francis.
