Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Strasburg, France, he enlisted in Limerick, Maine, as a Private of Company B, 1st Maine Volunteer Heavy Artillery on October 5, 1864 under the name of John Chapman, giving his place of birth as St. John, New Brunswick, for the reason that his father was not willing that he should go. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery at Deatonsville (Sailor’s Creek), Virginia on April 6, 1865. His citation reads "capture of flag" and was issued on May 10, 1865. He served in the Union Army until September 11, 1865 being discharged at Fort Baker, DC. He subsequently served in the United States Navy as a 2nd Class Fireman on board the Steam Propeller "USS Monongahela" from October 24, 1865 to July 8, 1868 and was discharged at New York harbor.
