Martha Jane Gaston, daughter of John and Mary [née Kirkpatrick] Gaston, was born March 5th 1810 at the family homestead in Richburg, South Carolina. Martha Jane's father was the grandson of Justice John Gaston; whose family were well known Revolutionary war patriots.
Around 1815, Martha Jane's parents emigrated west to the are around Wilcox County, Alabama. This is were Martha Jane grew to adulthood and married her first husband, James Hill Kirkpatrick, around 1829. She and James had three children and lived in Jackson, Madison County, Mississippi.

After James died in 1845, Martha married on November 18th 1845, Washington "Wash" Lovett Bell, a widower with five children. Martha Jane and Wash Bell would add two children:

In 1851, Martha Jane and Wash Bell moved their growing family to the area Near hamburg in Ashley County, Arkansas. There they built a large plantation; There Martha Jane died on the 20th of July 1861.
