Deputies reported that the investigation, which has been going on for five years, finally paid off when new information was developed, but authorities wouldn't reveal the nature of the latest findings.

Two Duarte men released
Two Duarte men arrested Sunday in connection with the 1972 bludgeoning death of James Dover, were released Monday afternoon after the district attorney's office declined to file criminal complaints against them. Authorities said that Calvin Thorton, 24, of the 2500 block of Milbrae Street and Phillip Ross, 24,of the 2000 block of Date Street, were freed pending further investigation. According to a spokesman for the district attorney's office, no charges were filed due to insufficient evidence that would link the pair to Dover's death. The 63-year-old Dover was found severely beaten in his Monrovia home in 1972. A later report from the county coroner's office stated that the man died as a result of the beating.

Monrovia man pleads guilty in death of brewery worker.

By BECK BARTINDALE
Staff Worker

A seven-year-old murder case ended Wednesday when Phillip Ross admitted that he was one of the two men who beat a 63-year-old Monrovia brewery worker to death.
Ross, 25 of Monrovia pleaded guilty in Los Angeles Superior Court to the 1972 murder of James Elton Dover, whose bludgeoned, sexually abused and decomposing body was found in his home. Ross' accomplice, Calvin Thornton, also 26 and from Monrovia, was found guilty of the murder last year and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The first break in the case came five years after the crime when a 10-year-old told authorities he has heard Thornton boast about the crime. His information led to the location of another man who reportedly was at the murder scene. Thornton and Ross were subsequently indicted by the county Grand Jury.
Ross, who has already served time at San Quentin for armed robbery, will be sentenced Feb. 26. Investigators believe the murder occurred in the course of a robbery.
