Clara E. Stackpole, 84, died Jan. 27 at a hospital in Sanford, Me. following a lengthy illness. She was the widow of Robert V. Stackpole. She was born April 8, 1893 in West Lebanon, Me. and had lived there all her life. She was the daughter of J. Fred Lord and Sarah Warburton Lord. She was educated in the Lebanon Elementary Schools, Lebanon Academy, Gorham Normal School, and the University of New Hampshire. She taught in the Lebanon Elementary Schools for 31 years and substituted for 10 more years after her retirement. On April 7, 1930, a lifetime teaching certificate was issued to her for teaching elementary grades in the State of Maine. She wrote a weekly column of West Lebanon news for the Rochester Courier for more than 20 years. She was a member of American Associate of Retired Persons, National Retired Teachers Association, Retired Teachers of Maine, West Lebanon Free Will Baptist Church, West Lebanon Community Ladies Circle, and the Milton (N.H.) Woman's Club. She had also served as registrar of voters in Lebanon for many years. She leaves two children; Mrs. Clifton Marion Carswell of Milton and George R. Stackpole of Lebanon, Me.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Grace Drew of Farmington; one brother, J. Edwin Lord of Milton; several cousins, nieces and nephews. Private family services were held Jan. 29 at the Edgerly Funeral Chapel in Rochester. Burial will be in Cold Spring Cemetery in East Rochester at a later date. Donations may be made in her memory to the Pine Tree Society for Crippled Children and Adults, Bath, Me., 04530.
