Gary was raised and educated in Coos Bay and in Klamath Falls, where he graduated from Mazama High School in 2002. While in school, he participated in football, baseball and track. He enjoyed fishing, sports, music, his Toyota pickup, the wild roller coasters at Six Flags and shopping for clothes. He was excited about getting married to Jacqueline and starting his family. He talked about becoming a teacher.
On Oct. 16, 2002, he entered the Marine Corps. He served his first tour of duty in Iraq from April 11 to Sept. 4, 2003, and he was serving his second tour. He was deployed out of the Marine base in Twenty nine Palms, Calif.
