According to his pension record, James Lewis Gilreath entered the Army on Sep 29, 1861 and remained until he went home (sick, he claimed) sometime during the fall of 1864 and stayed. It took many years but James was finally granted a pension for his service. After James died, Armelda Gilreath drew a pension, for a short time, until her own death.


James Lewis Gilreath served in Company "E" 12th Regiment, Kentucky Infantry, (Union Army) along with his brother Benjamin M. Gilreath. Benjamin M. was killed in August 1864 during the "Battle for Atlanta"
