Ed was born March 20, 1925, the only child of James Lydell Murphy and Martha Belle Justice. He joined the Navy at age 17 at the beginning of WWII. While at home on leave he met and married Sarah Mirl Pope. He spent the next 16 years in the military, serving in both WWII and the Korean War. He retired in 1958 on a medical discharge. After spending the next few years in Alabama he and Mirl moved their family to Michigan where he worked for the Chrysler Corp for 20 years before retiring back to Rainsville Alabama in 1988.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sarah Mirl Pope Murphy, Rainsville; son, Jim Murphy, Anchorage, Alaska; daughters, Brenda Temple, Gadsden, Kathie Wiegert, Chicago, Ill., and Lynn Cook, Atlanta, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Ronald Wayne Murphy and his parents James Lydell Murphy and Martha Belle Justice Grace.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Rainsville Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Keith Atchley and The Rev. David Martin officiating. Burial followed in Rainbow Memory Garden in Rainbow City, Alabama.
