Former Shawnee and Elgin resident Nila Mae Berryhill Newton, 81, died Sunday, March 20, at a Norman hospital.
She was born Feb. 18, 1924, in Elgin to Mary Jane Powers Berryhill and Ulysess Berryhill. She attended Elgin schools and was active in band and orchestra.
She married William R. Newman in Oklahoma City. They traveled throughout western Oklahoma and to Vallejo, Calif., but settled in Shawnee in 1949, where they ran a dairy farm and horseback riding stable.
About 1970, she returned to Elgin and lived with her mother, Mary and helped care for her until her death in 1996.
She worked many years for Southwestern Bell as a telephone operator and at St Gregory's University as a switchboard operator. She was on the Elgin Library Board and helped research and work on the publication, "The History of Elgin Oklahoma"
In 1999, she moved to Noble Senior Citizens Center where she lived until she moved to the Noble Health Care Center in June 2002.
Survivors include her daughter, Karen Gwen Davenport; son-in-law, Doyle Davenport; and granddaughter, Lori Mae Davenport, all of Slaughterville; two sisters, Olivine Barnett, formerly of Elgin, Billye Sue Lathen and husband, Ves Lathen, of Prairie Village, Kan.; two nieces, Ann Anderson, of Prairie Village, Kan., and Velma Barton and Bob Barton of Oklahoma City; nephew, Philip Barnett and wife Janie; and numerous other cousins, grand nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Elgin Cemetery. There will be viewing 6-8 p.m. today for friends and family at the Becker/Robbins Funeral Home in Fletcher.
