James m. Ann Elizabeth Baxter ca 1843 Currituck Co., NC. Her parents were Thomas Baxter and Marie Grace Phillips. Ann was b. ca 1818 Currituck Co. NC; d. 27 May 1854, Currituck Co. NC.

After the death of his wife he went to Mississippi with his brothers but bought property from Bryan Gardner in 1860 in Craven Co. (the Hollis Tract) Arapahoe, now Pamlico Co. NC.


James' real estate property value was $2,250. He owned 10 slaves; the oldest was 80 yrs and the youngest 5 yrs.

By 1860, the family was in Craven Co.; the area in which they settled eventually became Pamlico Co., NC.

There was a James M. Land who served in the Confederacy as a Pvt. with Walker's Battalion, Thomas' North Carolina Legion. Not sure if this is the James M. Land of this memorial.

On 8 Nov. 1871, Jeremiah Land petitioned the Craven Co. Probate Court for guardianship of Thomas A. Land, 17 yrs, as he was an orphan. The document stated that Thomas' estate was worth $400 which required protection.

On 3 July 1891, the heirs of James M. Land appeared in Craven Co. Superior Court in the Matter of Administration of his estate. It is stated that James M. Land is deceased without leaving a Last Will & Testament and that the value of his estate was $19.55. The heirs entitled to these monies were listed as J.K. Land, E.B. Land, Thomas A. Land & S.G. Brinson.

Thomas Ann Land, b. 17 May 1854 Currituck Co. NC; d. 1 April 1932, New Bern, Craven Co. NC; m. Margaret Ellen Brinson 10 November 1875, Bethany Christian Church, Arapahoe, NC - she was the daughter of Simon Speight Brinson and Sarah Smith McCoy. Thomas Ann Land was a charter member of Rainbow Lodge, Arapahoe, NC. Upon their move to New Bern ca 1900, he joined the Doric Lodge and was on the New Bern Police Force. They owned a home at 122 Broad St. New Bern. Margaret Ellen Brinson, b. 29 June 1859, and d. 28 November 1936, Washington, D. C. both buried Cedar Grove Cemetery, New Bern, Craven Co. NC.
